This Week at Peace - March 25, 2011

Your Peace staff and volunteers have added a brief prayer service to our work day. We are using the daily morning prayers from the Book of Common Worship, which I will attach, in case you’d like to join us in praying each day at noon. You can use this wherever you are. Stop for five minutes and remember who is in charge of this world.

This week’s scripture, Romans 5:1-5 invites us to move from suffering to endurance to character to hope. College daughter Emily says this is her favorite scripture, and it is truly a gem!

A few dates to remember: Discover Your Gifts begins Sunday 5-6 for 8 weeks! Couples at Peace will enrich your relationship – three weeks Wednesdays at 6:15. Sisters of Peace, let Suzi Regulski Shirey know if you’re coming to the 2:00 Tea Party (not the political group) on April 2. Nancy Hughes needs checks asap for those going to the Passion Play in Wauchula on April 9.

New and prospective members – learn more about Peace and about the Presbyterian Church by attending a class April 3 and 10 from 11:30-12:30. Everyone, mark your calendars now for our Good Friday Service on April 22ndat 7:00.

On Sunday we will celebrate the new membership of Martha and Bob Waldrop and of Kristina Pino, joining with her children, Ethan and Grace! The Mission Team will encourage you to keep the Lenten discipline of sharing by making small yet significant sacrifices for the sake of others.

Pastor Tricia requests your prayers as she, along with a couple of other adults, will supervise Peace’s first ever “lock-in” with nearly a dozen youth tonight! Thank God for our ministry center, because no sane adult would invite such a large group of teens into their home for the night.

Finally, a special request from our friend Glenn Kiplinger (wheel-chair bound) who lost his beloved wife, Martha, one month ago: Please consider providing a home for Martha’s Jack Russell Terrier, Parker, who is too difficult for Glenn to manage in his new assisted living facility.

Peace to all,

Elizabeth

This Week at Peace - - March 18, 2011

Ten people from Peace attended the Presbytery’s Main Event, this year featuring a professor on the subject of CONVERGENCE WORSHIP. I am attaching Mickey Miller’s notes as well as two articles by Dr. Cherry, for those who are interested in learning more. (below)

One of our take-home messages is that we should not spend more time in announcements than we spend praying in worship, so we are trimming our announcements and counting on you to read This Week at Peace and TAKE YOUR BULLETIN HOME to be informed of all Peace’s opportunities for mission, fellowship, and learning.

The Fellowship Team invites you to ADULTS NIGHT OUT (bring friends if you’d like) at Demetrios, 17220 Cortez Road, Bradenton, 34207. Nancy Hughes is making reservations. nanskodi7@gmail.com

See the life of Christ enacted in the outdoor arena at Wauchula’s annual PASSION PLAY on April 9th. Arrange your tickets ($18 adults, $16 kids) through Nancy and Bob Hughes.

The Mission Team believes that members of Peace have won the lottery! Just tick off our blessings: we’ve been born in the United States, we enjoy clean water and abundant food; we are free to move and communicate and organize. Get your SHARING CALENDAR for Lent, and grow in gratitude. Note: Family Promise Garage Sale – First Presbyterian, Bradenton, 15th St W and Manatee Ave 8:00-2:00.

We are all concerned with the tragedy in JAPAN. Let me remind you that one-third of our One Great Hour of Sharing Offering (collected on Easter or before) will be given to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, working in Japan and other areas of desperate need. We will sing a prayer for the Japanese this week, in place of our Doxology.

Sunday’s SERMON will be a dialogue between Pastor Tricia and me about the most often quote verse of scripture: John 3:16 God so loved the world… I’m hoping to see YOU this Sunday!

And if you’d like to view A MOVIE, The Postman (Il Postino), with Peace friends, we’ll see you tonight!

With love and deep gratitude for our community of faith and our Lord’s love,

Elizabeth

Peace be with You!

Peace Family and Friends,

As we spring forward with our clocks this week, Peace Church moves to a weekly 10:00 worship hour, because we have heard that many of you would appreciate that. For those who liked the earlier hour, we thank you for bearing with us while we try the new schedule for a few months.

Today is Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, a time to renew your commitment to Jesus Christ. We had a syrupy good Fat Tuesday Pancake Br-inner last night, raising $500 for the Peace Youth. We look forward to being marked with the sign of the cross tonight at 7:00, asking God to wash clean our hearts.

Did you know that the most substantial Christian formation happens in churches where intergenerational relationships provide loving support and steady encouragement for faithfulness? There are relationships of convenience – and then there are relationships of commitment. We are committed to sticking with you, through thick and thin. Come, be part of the inspiring, authentic, nurturing, compassionate, and responsive life of Peace Presbyterian on Lakewood Ranch Blvd at Technology Terrace.

New learning opportunities coming to Peace soon – Couples “at Peace”, Spiritual Masters, Discover Your Gifts, Revelation. Fellowship activities abound too! You should have seen the Peace family (ages 7-57) playing kickball together in the park. Call or email to learn more.

Peace be with you all,

Elizabeth

This Week at Peace

This Sunday we celebrate the Transfiguration, which reminds us of the dual nature of Jesus Christ, a human in whom God’s majestic glory resided. Amazing!

Tomorrow ten people from Peace are going to the “Do the Right Thing” March in Tampa to support the Coalition of Immokalee Workers in their quest for just pay. Meet at church at 10:30 if you’d like to go.

Fat Tuesday Brinner at church from 6:00-7:30 on March 8 is a great opportunity to invite a friend to enjoy Peace fellowship, while supporting the youth group and filling up on yummy pancakes and sausage!

Our Ash Wednesday service at 7:00 on March 9 is a great way to begin a meaningful Season of Lent.

The Youth will be participating in a Crop Walk for Hunger. Find out more Sunday.

Final reminder: Nursery volunteer list will soon be published. Let us know if you feel uncomfortable taking a single turn annually in rocking the babies and reading to the preschoolers. Choir members will offered a turn in summer only.

Last opportunity to sign up for the Presbytery’s Main Event on March 13 (brochure attached)

Note that we will spring forward on March 13 to our trial schedule for 6 months: 10:00 Worship, 11:00 Fellowship, 11:30 Lively Learning.

Our Couples at Peace Class will begin again soon. Speak to Chip Schaaff if you would like to participate. Invite some friends too.

A spiritual gifts class, Discovering God’s Vision for Your Life, will run for 8 weeks on Sunday evenings, beginning on March 27, led by Bill Clough. The materials are produced by Stephen Ministries and are excellent.

The peace of Christ surround all of you who are struggling with grief, illness, or anything else. Take some time to pray today, as it is World Day of Prayer.

Elizabeth
