Workday, Beattitudes, Souper Bowl

Work days tomorrow (Feb 1) and next Saturday.   Come when you can.  Leave when you must.   Do what you can.   Enjoy the fellowship.   Improve the property.   Experience the gratitude for our mutual blessing.

On Sunday we will start with the most memorable words of the prophet Micah:  What does the Lord require?  To do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God.  We will center ourselves around the attitudes of being which Jesus considers blessed or perhaps best?  Humble, sad, meek, longing for goodness, merciful, pure-hearted, peacemaking, mistreated for faithfulness.  We will end with Paul’s reminder that God chose what appears foolish, weak, low and despised– so that none of us would boast.

At the conclusion of worship, our youth will collect the Souper Bowl Offering, all of which will be given to the Manatee Food Bank to tackle hunger.  As our seminary friend, Rev. Brad Smith, prayed in 1990, “"Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us to be mindful of those who are without a bowl of soup to eat." This prayer gave birth to an idea in a Presbyterian youth group.  Why not use Super Bowl weekend to unify the nation for a higher purpose: collecting dollars and canned food for the needy?   Since that time, youth groups in churches and schools have collected over 90 million dollars in soup pots for food banks, soup kitchens, and other charities.  Our goal this year = $1000 and thanks to one gift last week, we are 10% there.

The Peace youth and their families will gather at the church at 5:30 to share a meal, report our totals to
www.souperbowl.org and enjoy the game, even while we critique the excesses of entertainment spending on professional sports, half-time music, and advertising.  Some of the statistics of poverty and excess that the youth and I discussed can be found in this week's Faith Matters in the Bradenton Herald.

Justice, kindness, humility, and peace to you all!

Elizabeth

Annual Meeting and Ordination

Dear Peace People,

Remember that this Sunday we will have our annual congregational meeting at 9:45, between the two services of worship.  At this meeting, you will witness the ordination and installation of new elders, and the commissioning of new ministry team leaders.  You will receive new photo and address directories, the 2014 budget and session priorities, and the reports from teams about their accomplishments and goals – all in a nice little blue folder.

Worship will focus on what it means to follow Jesus – the call to authentic discipleship.  Matthew 4:12-23.  Hope to see you for two hours on Sunday, beginning at 8:30 or at 9:45!   We have set up 145 seats in the chapel and parlor to accommodate as many as possible in the meeting.  It’s a great time to see the friends you are missing in the “other” service.

Please sign up on Sunday or email Neil MacQueen (
neilmacqueen@gmail.com) if you are able to help with our work days on February 1 and 15.  Dedication is on February 23 at 3:00 – two brief identical services with tour/refreshments while not in service.  We will follow our regular morning schedule earlier that day.

The 2014 winter edition of Peaceful News is attached, thanks to Diane Brinkmeyer and Peter Miller.  It almost feels like winter out there today -- but not really.  : )

With gratitude for all God has done with your help,

Elizabeth

MLK Week-end

Dear Peace Participants,
Last Saturday and last night (Friday) your newly elected and continuing elders on session met to build relationships, to examine leadership styles, and to craft a vision for 2014.   This vision will be shared next Sunday, the 26th at 9:45, when we ordain and install elders and hear the brief annual report of our teams.

Ministry Team Leaders met together this morning to discuss effective Christian leadership.  Peace is blessed with so many capable volunteers, who give their time, talent, and energy to shape the future of our church.  Share your ideas with them, celebrate their accomplishments, and most significantly, help them out.  Join a team or be a committed participant in the work of a team.  Chances are you will be blessed, even as you are a blessing to others.
Tomorrow we read John the Baptist’s reflection on the amazing person and purpose of Christ “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.”   We hear in John 1:29-46 how the early followers of Christ were challenged to “Come and see.”

Here are a couple of quotes from Martin Luther King for your reflection this holiday week-end, church named Peace:  We must develop and maintain the capacity to forgive. He who is devoid of the power to forgive is devoid of the power to love. There is some good in the worst of us and some evil in the best of us. When we discover this, we are less prone to hate our enemies.

An individual has not started living until he (she) can rise above the narrow confines of his (her) individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity.
The youth are celebrating the end of a term (exams are over!), so we will be going to the Manatee County Fair, hearing the Christian Band “Building 429” and having a lock-in Sunday night.

Renovation work has begun again.  Notice the wonderful changes in the chapel and music room.  Add your suggestions for the building to the Peace mailbox, and plan to help out on Feb 1 or 15, so we can be in top form on February 23 at 3:00.  In case you are wondering how we will fit everyone on Dedication Day, we plan to hold two back-to-back 40 minute services.  When not in worship, you can enjoy refreshments and a tour of the building and grounds.
Peace to you,

Elizabeth

Epiphany!

On the first day of Christmas, with dear friends and family, I rejoiced in the Christmas crowds at Peace.
On the second day of Christmas, Don Deibert treated well -- a lovely cruise Tampa to Cozumel.

On the third day of Christmas, wide ocean and sun bright, table spread, cell phones off, a pure delight.

On the fourth day of Christmas, our footsteps found the land of the Mayan ruins in the Yucatan.
On the fifth day of Christmas, Team Deibert  is a thing, winning volleyball and basketball rings.

On the sixth day of Christmas, we drove to Georgia’s shore, to dine with some friends from Ecuador.

On the seventh day of Christmas, my true love let us stop at the fourteenth annual Mt Olive Pickle Drop.

On the eighth day of day of Christmas, extended family shared a rowdy, crowdy day of new year’s cheer.

On the ninth day of Christmas our good Lord brought us back, with good-byes to three kids along the track.
On the tenth day of Christmas, at church I reappeared, great news of last Sunday pleased to hear!

On the eleventh day of Christmas, our thank-you’s to complete -- your pledges and your gifts are really neat!

On the twelfth day of Christmas, my joy to worship too, hearing Richard preach the word of Christ with you.
On the eve of the day that we call Epiphany, we’ll light the bonfire with security.

Bonfire Sunday eve, John 1 Sunday morn, thank you for your gifts, great to hear good news, glad to be back home, Happy New Year, FIVE silver rings!  Four good days on ship, joyful family time, thankful for good friends, and a partridge in a Peace tree!

Looking forward to hearing about your twelve days.  See you Sunday!

Pastor Elizabeth
