This Week at Peace - - 17 June 2012

Dear Friends,

I am writing from beautiful Montreat, NC, where our ten teens and their faithful chaperones are experiencing a very meaningful conference called "Perfectly Imperfect."  Marilyn and I arrived in time to share dinner and worship with them last night.   Thank you again for making it possible for them to have this faith-shaping experience.

This Sunday the Rev. William Kemp is preaching on one of my favorites -- the Parable of the Prodigal Son, which also could be called the Parable of the Loving Father.  Hate to miss it, but this retreat in the mountains will be good for the soul of this pastor.   Don't forget your Father's Day Offering of Non-Perishable Food.

Elizabeth

See below a important letter from the Active Elders and Building Vision Team:

We thank you for your responses to the Building Capability Survey, conducted in May.   We are glad to announce that there is great enthusiasm at Peace for building phase one of a new church home – 94%.  Among those who completed the survey, 90% intend to make a pledge to the building campaign.   However, the survey has shown us that we simply do not have the means within the congregation to build and to sustain the scope of the design we shared with you.   The promised giving of the congregation for a three year period is in the range of $475,000 - $825,000.

This means that we cannot afford to spend 3 million dollars in our first phase.  Rather, we think we are in a position to spend no more than $1.5 million.   The site work alone will cost close to $350,000.   So we, the Session of Elders, want you know that the Building Vision Team is working hard on all options for scaling back the size and the expense of the building plans.   We have explored the possibility of buying Faith Christian (the foreclosed church on Lorraine Road) but to no avail.    We are examining loans through the Presbyterian Investment and Loan Program, as well as looking for alternative funding through trusts and “angel” gifts from beyond the congregation.

Also, we are carefully considering our timing for building, as it relates to church growth, knowing that a larger congregation can better sustain both capital campaign and the subsequent operating costs of a new facility.   We estimate that the total increase in annual cost to the church for sustaining $1.5 million dollar building project is $132,000.   We are trying to ascertain our potential length of stay at the current location.    We promise to keep you informed of our progress.

In the meantime, yes, you may give as you are able, to the Building Fund of Peace.    And thank you for continuing to help us prepare for that day when we officially commence a campaign to build.   (Checks payable to Peace with Building Fund in the memo.)

Building the congregation of Peace for the last several years has required patience, discernment, prayer, and deep trust in God’s providence.   Building a permanent home for Peace’s worship, ministry, and mission will require the same patience, discernment, prayer, and deep trust.   We are grateful that you are on this adventuresome journey of Christian faith with us.   “Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it, labor in vain.”   (Psalm 127:1a)

This Week at Peace -- June 10, 2012

Tomorrow (Saturday) our older youth leave for a week in Montreat.   Pray for them by name that they will grow in Christian faith:  Abigail, Amanda, Andrew, Emily, Fonzi, Julie, Kelsey, Liz, Matthew, Rebecca, as well as for the energy and faith of their devoted chaperones.

You are invited by our Peace friends, Gopi and Neela Chari, to attend the Celebration of Buddha’s Birthday at the Unity Church at 4:00 tomorrow, Saturday.   (3023 Proctor Rd, Sarasota 34231).  I, Elizabeth, will be one of several speakers representing different faiths.    Delicious Asian food will be enjoyed as part of the celebration.   Carpool leaves from Peace at 3:30.

On Sunday, bring some pocket change and cash.   The children are running a lemonade stand and the younger youth are washing cars after worship.   The money they raise will help us provide $50 scholarships to anyone at Peace who attends summer camp at Cedarkirk.

In worship this Sunday we will focus on the lectionary epistle, 2 Corinthians 4:7-12;16-5:1 which invites us to consider that the weakness of our dying bodies is a witness to the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be seen in us.   Our suffering prepares us for an eternal weight of glory.   Our last Being at Peace class, by providence of God and not our own planning, also focuses on our mortality.   Are you at peace with your own dying?

Don’t forget these two upcoming Mission opportunities:  Father’s Day Food Offering and Habitat Workday on June 23.

We had a wonderful  Celebration of Peace picnic last Sunday.  Thanks to the Youth & Children and Fellowship Teams for all their good planning.

Finally, we bid farewell to Cotsie and Bob Osborne, who have not only left for summer, but who have made a decision to move closer to their children in Pennsylvania.   We are grateful to God for their ministry among us – for their involvement in both the Voices and the Ringers of Peace, on the Congregational Care Team, and on the Admin Team.   Grace and peace be with you, Cotsie and Bob, as you make this transition.

With love,

Elizabeth

This Week at Peace - - June 3rd, 2012

Ce-le-brate good times, come on!   This Sunday at Peace we are celebrating high school graduates, Nathan Grantham’s end of chemo, the arrival of Marilyn Tucker (seminary intern), and the departure of our Older Youth to the Conference in Montreat on June 9th

Pastor Tricia is preaching on Psalm 23, a favorite scripture for many people.   It will be a great day for building relationships at Peace – across generations.   We hope you can stay for the hot dog lunch and fun activities which follow worship.   Invite a friend.

Thank you to all who participated in the Building Vision Survey in May.  The Building Vision Team is processing information this week and next, and will be reporting to our Session of Elders soon.   We will keep you posted.

We are grateful for your Pentecost Offerings for Presbyterian ministries with young adults, youth, and at-risk children totaling $1154 this year!   Isn’t it a joy to know you are helping others with your generosity?   As a church, Peace is committed to a 10% benevolence  (a tithe) each year to mission giving.  Our next special offering is Food for Father’s Day – to the Manatee County Food Bank.

Peace to all,

Elizabeth
